Is Juicing Alone Enough?

Below is an excerpt from my book The Boda Cleanse – The 4-Step Intermittent Fasting Program to Detox, Burn Fat and Restore Vitality. 

Juice cleansing benefits are seldomly fully realised. As I point out below, most people these days come into their Juice Cleanse too nutritionally depleted, and then don’t get enough out of juices alone to power their detox organs and repair themselves at a cellular level.

There is still some short term gain, but in the end the Juice Cleanse can only be viewed as a start, it needs to transition to something else that continues the process. It takes far more than a few days of Juice Cleansing to make a real difference. 

The Boda Cleanse is a 19 Day Program which starts with a supported “Juice & Smoothie Cleanse” and then transitions to an “Intermittent Fast” .

The following is from “Chapter 4 – Shine” , which goes into a little more detail.. 


“The Boda Cleanse” is very much a program focused on restoring the body’s ability to burn stored fat,  as it is only when burning stored fat that deep cellular detoxing can occur. Integrating calorie restriction / fasting, simply enables this shift to happen more quickly and effectively.

Fasting though doesn’t have to mean imposing deprivation and suffering upon ones self.  In fact if the fasting has been particularly intense then it’s a likely sign that it hasn’t served the person adequately. Having observed hundreds of clients come into our clinic practice over the years doing “juice fasts” or even “water fasts” I’ve often felt their fast was doing them little to no good, (or in some cases was actually doing more harm than good). Simply, they weren’t getting enough nutrient support, particularly for the liver, which means the highly toxic “intermediate products” produced by the liver would be reabsorbed back into the bloodstream. With the amount of toxicity dumped back into the circulation, along with the lack of fiber in a juice or water fast, the elimination channels would often then be laboring.

Organic vegetable / fruit juices do have the potential to contain the necessary amount of antioxidants, but these antioxidants are highly sensitive to “oxidation” so the juices need to be “cold pressed” and then consumed immediately after being prepared in order to still obtain adequate antioxidant benefit.

Consuming juices alone might work well for some people, particularly if they have very robust “detox organs” but the vast majority of people these days are far too toxic for juice fasting alone.  Finally, the other problem I see with plain “juice fasting” is that the body is being fed almost exclusively carbohydrate (sugar) with inadequate protein and fat. This more often than not locks the person into continuing to burn sugar the whole time, limiting their ability to switch their metabolism to “efficient fat burning”.

“The Boda Cleanse” includes (at the very least) an “adequate” level of protein through both Phase I, the “5 Day Smoothie & Juice Cleanse” and Phase II, the “14 Day Intermittent Fast”. Remembering protein’s job is to repair cells and makes up enzymes which drive all metabolic activity, so it makes obvious sense that the body be getting at least adequate levels of protein, even whilst fasting.  “Reshape” is a raw, plant-based high protein smoothie formula which features superfoods that are complete proteins that are easily digested.

Additionally, omega-3 fatty acids are contained in many  of Reshape’s “superfood” ingredients which not only are the body’s preferred fuel source but act as potent antioxidants. “The Boda Cleanse” also recommends as an option (particularly for Fast Oxidisers) to add omega-3 oil (i.e flax, chia or hemp seed) to the Breakfast smoothie each morning. Similarly, during the “14 Day Intermittent Fast”, good fats (monounsaturated and omega-3) are emphasised for lunch and the evening soup.

Whilst imposing calorie restriction via fasting is important to force the body to go to fat stores to fuel metabolism (and hence promote detoxing), having an adequate level of protein and good fats will enhance the body’s ability to switch the metabolism from “sugar burning” to efficient “fat burning”.  Having this balance of nutrients makes the program not only easier but far more effective than doing juice fasting alone.
