Ah, spring time at last! After a cold, dormant winter, plants, flowers and animals breathe new life in the world around us: budding, sprouting, growing. With new life abounding around us, Spring cues us to renew our own body and revitalize the senses.
According to both the Ayurvedic and Chinese health systems, spring is the ideal time to re-build your energy and detoxify your body from the “hibernation” of winter. In the colder months we tend to indulge more in rich, heaver foods and drinks, as well as more “comfort” foods, which can congest the liver.
In Chinese medicine, Spring is the season associated with the liver. The liver is in charge of the smooth flow of qi, or energy. When qi is blocked, or when the liver becomes congested, there is illness and pain.
Perhaps too you’ve accumulated a couple of extra kilos or maybe you’re just ready to shed your fatigue, in favor of boundless energy, healthy tissues, and a strong body!
If you’re ready to feel more vibrant than before, cleansing and detoxification can help.
5 Ways to Cleanse the Liver
Spring provides a bounty of foods that have exceptional natural detoxifying power. In the rainy and muddy months of spring, nature provides a low-fat, low-mucus forming harvest of sprouts, greens and berries.
These in-season foods are wonderfully detoxifying as they decongest the liver and lymph systems.
These foods can help you feel better, boost fat burning and prevent illness during the months of spring. Additionally beetroot, ginger, dandelion root, milk thistle, turmeric and peppermint are all wonderful liver toners which are featured ingredients in our Boda “Cleanse” product.
2. Smoothie & Juice Fasting
To overcome the heaviness of winter and rest and rejuvenate the liver, what better time than Spring to do some Fasting?
At Boda we’ve developed our 5 Day Smoothie & Juice Fasting Program which features our fermented greensformula “Shine” to enhance juices and fermented plant based protein formula “Reshape” to supplement smoothies.
In keeping with the Spring, Liver cleansing theme, during September we’re also including our liver / bowel toning formula “Cleanse” for FREE as part of the 5 Day Program!
The program also features MSM (see below), which promotes detoxification of the liver.

3. Colon Cleansing (with coffee infusion)
After emphasising Spring harvest greens and herbs, and all the juices and smoothies, it’s time to clear the decks and flush out the winter congestion from the colon and liver.
Nothing beats the clean feeling of a good thorough colon cleanse! Again with Liver cleansing a key theme for Spring, we’re pleased to now offer “coffee infused” colonics here at Boda.
As a portion of the water introduced to the colon via colon hydrotherapy is absorbed through the hemorrhoidal vein, then to the portal vein leading back to the liver, the effect of coffee entering the liver is that the bile ducts expand enabling congested debris to be flushed out of the liver. MSM, short for methylsulfonylmethane, is a safe, natural organic form of sulfur readily absorbed and utilized by our bodies. MSM is composed of 34% bio-available sulfur, making it the richest source of organic sulfur available.
MSM is known as a “cell potentiator” making the cell membrane more permeable, thereby allowing greater absorption of nutrients and greater ability to flush toxins out ( thereby providing anti-inflammatory properties).
Among it’s host of benefits it supports regulation of insulin production, improves skin smoothness and elasticity, enhances bowel function and liver detoxification.
Liver Detoxification with MSM – Sulfur is an extremely important component of the “master antioxidant” Glutathione, the amino acid integral in phase II liver detoxification enzymes. Adequate levels of this sulfur-based amino acid are necessary for the liver to perform its detoxification role. Supplementation with MSM can therefore greatly promote liver detoxification.
5. Restore Gut Flora Balance
Beneficial microflora lining our digestive tract perform a plethora of vital functions essential to our health and wellbeing. One of the most important is that they act as our first line of immune system defense. In fact the intestinal flora are a key contributor in detoxification, ridding the body of some 40 percent of the toxins in food. In this sense, they serve as a satellite liver. Put another way, if the gut didn’t have the intestinal flora, the liver would have to work almost twice as hard.
Any program to cleanse and rejuvenate the liver then ought to include a focus on inoculating the gut with healthy bacteria. Probiotic supplements help restore balance, but even better why not include fermented
foods such as homemade sauerkraut or coconut kefir in your diet everyday. Or incorporate our any one or more of our Boda fermented powdered foods ( Cleanse, Reshape, Shine ) to add to juices, smoothies, make protein balls or add to salad dressings.
So there you have it – some key Liver Cleansing tools and methods.
Happy Liver Cleansing!
